Liquid Masking Tape

Liquid masking tape is a type of fluid used in painting, particularly in the hobby and modeling industry for painting miniatures. It is a solution that is applied to surfaces to create a temporary barrier that prevents the paint from adhering to the protected areas.

Liquid masking tape can be applied with a brush and it dries to form a flexible, rubber-like film that can be easily peeled off once the paint is dry. One of the advantages is that it can be applied to irregular surfaces, such as curves and corners, where other traditional products may not adhere properly. It can also be used to create fine lines and details, which can be difficult to achieve with traditional tapes.

As general advice, It is important to follow the manufacturer's instructions when using them, as improper application or removal can damage the surface underneath or leave residue on the surface. It is also recommended to test a small area before applying it to the entire surface to ensure compatibility with the paint and surface.

Keep in mind that a too-thin layer of the mask could generate problems with removing it later because the plastic film will be too thin and could break easily.

A trick is to use a ball of Blu Tack paste to lift the mask easily and remove it without leaving remains stuck on the figure. Keep in mind that sometimes it is difficult to find the exact area where it has been applied as it is covered with dry acrylic paint, and therefore it is not very clear where the end is.

Can I use liquid masking in the airbrush?

Using it in an airbrush can potentially cause clogs in the nozzle, especially if the fluid is not properly thinned or the airbrush is not cleaned thoroughly after use. Although it is possible to use it, it is generally not recommended since masking products are not normally acrylic, and there are other methods, such as using an airbrush or painting tape, that may be more suitable for airbrushing.
