What is an MDF square base?

MD bases are made of medium-density fibreboard a type of gaming base that are commonly used in tabletop miniature games with which it is compatible such as Warhammer: The Old World or any D&D game.. This type of material is a composite material made from wood fibers and resin, which is compressed under high pressure to create a dense and durable sheet of wood.

They are precisely cut into a shape with straight edges and corners. It provides a stable platform for mounting and displaying miniature models during gameplay. MDF bases are typically available in various sizes to accommodate different unit types and scales.

The advantage of using this material is its durability and stability since they are rigid and less prone to warping or bending compared to other materials like plastic or resin. They provide a solid foundation for miniature models, ensuring they stand securely on the tabletop without wobbling or toppling over.

These types can be customized and decorated according to the player's preference. They can be painted, textured, or embellished with additional scenic elements to match the theme or setting of the game. Some players also choose to add flocking, long grass flock, or other terrain materials to enhance the visual appeal of the base.

Where can I use MDF square bases for miniature games?

Some examples of the use of square bases in the world of wargames and compatible with Warhammer:

1.- Miniature Game Board; Use them to create a modular game board for games. You can attach multiple square bases together to form the terrain, creating a customizable and interchangeable game board. You can paint and add terrain features like hills, buildings, or forests to enhance the gaming experience.

2.- Display Base: They make excellent display bases for showcasing individual miniatures. You can mount a single miniature onto them using glue or a pinning technique. Decorate the base with scenic elements that complement the miniature, such as Basing Materials, static grass, or hobby sand. This creates a visually appealing display for your miniatures.

3.- Movement Templates and Measurement Tools: They can be cut into, using a hobby saw, into smaller pieces to create movement templates or measurement tools. These templates help determine the distance that miniatures can move during gameplay. For this use, you will a large piece, but by cutting them into various shapes and sizes, you can create templates for movement arcs, measuring distances, or area-of-effect spells. This utility is a bit complex and almost inside the world of carpentry.

4.- Objective Markers: they can serve as objective markers or tokens within the game. Paint it in a specific color or pattern, and place them on the game board to represent objectives, resources, or control points. These markers can add tactical elements and strategic goals to your games.

5.- Terrain Elements: they can be transformed into standalone terrain elements such as platforms, barricades, or walls. By stacking or gluing multiple squared bases together, you can create multi-level structures or obstacles that add complexity to the game's battlefield.

When using them for wargames, it's important to consider your specific game's rules and requirements. Make sure to choose a suitable size for the bases that fit within the game's guidelines and allow for comfortable gameplay. Additionally, be mindful of any safety precautions and materials that may be required during the crafting process, such as wearing protective equipment when cutting or painting the MDF.
