What are Color shift paint?

Color shift paint are metallic acrylics that change color depending on the angle at which light falls on them. A color changing paint is also known as iridescent. Chameleon paints are a trademark from Green Stuff World.

The chameleon paint effects (sometimes misspelled Camelian paint) are formulated with pearlescent particles that change colour depending on the perspective from which you look at them. They are very easy to apply, have excellent adhesion, and dry fairly quickly. It is best to apply them over a black primer or a black spray primer to achieve even greater colour intensity, and then apply a matte, satin, or gloss varnish, depending on the effect you want to achieve.

Green Stuff World is the brand with the largest variety of colour shift chameleon colors for painting figures and scale models, both classic and fantasy or wargames, also stands out for its intensity of tone change when light hits it.

How to use color shift paints

The first thing to keep in mind is that there are 2 types according to their appearance: one colored and one whitish, but do not panic because although it is whitish this is normal and when you apply multiple pearly colors will appear by magic. All you have to do is shake the can well so that there is a perfect mixture of pigment. On the other hand, you have to know that the larger the figure, the greater the appreciation of the effect. This is also greater on curved surfaces since the light is reflected much better on them.

How to achieve the Chameleon effect with these iridescent paints?

Apply a black or dark base coat, if possible with gloss to achieve a better result.

It is necessary to apply several very light coats until the desired tone is shown. Keep in mind that it dries very fast, but you must wait until the previous coat is well dry before applying the next one. Three or four coats should be enough to achieve the desired effect.

Although they are very resistant, the varnish is essential to ensure durability. You decide if you want it matte or glossy, but think that a surface with a glossy varnish reflects light better and leads to a more spectacular generation.

What is Metal Filter Interference?

Metal Filters are transparent acrylic filters that allow to modify and metalize anything they cover, and therefore, in addition to the existing Colorshift colours, it is also possible to apply these interference filters on the color shift paints causing displacements of the original tones of the piece within its color spectrum to create new reflections when the light hits it, making it something unique and unmatched.

What is Camelian paint?

It is just a misspelling of a special type of paint that changes its colour depending on the angle from which it is viewed and the lighting conditions.

It contains tiny colour-shifting pigments that give it a unique appearance. Pigments used with them are designed to reflect and refract light, producing a color-changing effect that can range from subtle to dramatic. As the name suggests, it is similar to the ability of the animal to change its shadow to blend in with its environment.

How does chameleon paints work?

Camelian paint is composed, among other elements, of pearlescent particles capable of changing colour when viewed from different perspectives. For this feature to work, it is essential to apply the product correctly. Although it is not difficult, it is important to follow each of the steps to ensure their adhesion and durability:

  1. Make sure the surface of the figure to be painted is clean, dry, and free of dust.
  2. Apply a black base coat to increase adhesion.
  3. Stir the bottle of the chameleon paints to ensure that the pigments are well mixed.
  4. Apply the first coat of the chosen camelian paint. These color shift paints from Green Stuff World can be applied with either a brush or airbrush.
  5. When the first coat is completely dry, apply the next one. In total, it is recommended to finish with 3 or 4 light coats so as not to lose the effect.
  6. Although it is a very resistant coloring it is better to varnish at the end. Depending on the final effect required by the figure or diorama, the varnish can be glossy or matte.
