Everything started from this miniature from Distopian brand, which I received from Germany. The scale was 1/35, perfect to integrate it into a small scene. Little ... I thought.

Suddenly, I remembered that I had to assemble a 1/35 scale Pick-Up van. And I said to myself ... what if ...?

OK, so let's do something like...

For sure, a pick-up van in that scale will not fit in a small vignette. So, I changed the dimensions to a diorama size. A bit of forex and glue, and we built a scenario according to our character.

The idea was already clear. The exterminator had finished a little job in an abandoned warehouse, and loaded with the remains of his work for the landfill. So I set out to build the warehouse.

While the scenery was drying up, the best thing to do is to take care of the rest of the pieces. A general oxide layer, which we can then show when we lift the paint from the vehicle.

And while the oxide was drying, I returned to the scenery, adding bricks to the facade, built with cork plates.

As a general base, I used a photographic frame to which I made very accentuated wear effects. It seemed important to me that it was also part of the atmosphere of abandonment of the scene.

Here you can see what structure the diorama will have, and where we will locate the heights of it. In this case behind, making the perfect viewing angle to match it exactly with the photograph angle.

To imitate the asphalt, I spread a thin layer of putty of walls on a sheet and let it dry. Then it's just a matter of cutting it into tiles and sticking them to the base. The dried putty breaks, giving a very interesting real look.

A layer of diluted putty will serve to texture the wall. In addition, it will serve as a primer too.

On the warehouse door, we will use the salt technique to imitate rust and rust. It is a simple technique of which we will do a tutorial later.

This is how the plates made with putty on paper are looks like. For the joints, I used sandy paste, very diluted, and without exceeding on quantity.

It was clear to me that the van should have a very striking colour, because on it, we will imitate all kinds of oxides and wear. So use the yellow with as much light as possible.

While the van was drying, I began to paint the floor, staining the joint areas. Then, I will add layers that will soften the effect.

The weathering on the frame of the warehouse was achieved with the help of a pair of tweezers and a piece of sponge. This is a Scifi vignette were we can exaggerate the effects a bit.

The phase that I like the most ... when you give free rein to brush and begin to imitate effects of blood, mud, splashes, graffiti, more graffiti, etc ..., for that I used some decals and numerals.

Well, that's how our van was doing, after a methodical treatment of oxides, washes and wear. I have also added some decals that undoubtedly give it more visibility to the vehicle.

My advice is that whenever you can, introduce in your dioramas some element that is easily recognizable by all, amateurs or not. You win in verisimilitude in the scene.

The canvases made with green stuff putty hide the true aspect of our hunted bug. But you can imagine ...

Do you remember our garbage container? This is what it looks like on the scene, after a session of dirt outside. As you can see also the floor plates now look perfect.

Each detail that is added could be part of a smaller vignette. If you get that, the diorama will be well balanced and it will gain in interest.

Finally, this is how our post apocalyptic vignette remains after all. Our character is greeted after earning his salary as an exterminator !!
