Frostgrave Sorceress conversion with Led.

An article taking you step by step to my conversion for Frostgrave of a Windmaster Miniatures miniature using some Green Stuff World bits and materials.

Preparando la miniatura

First we check that the led and the battery both work and then with the help of an x-acto knife we remove the staff from the miniature as we will be replacing it with a brass rod.

Cableando la peana

We drill a hole through the base for the led's cables/resistor and keep it in place with a drop of gel superglue.

04

Now we connect the battery holder cables (which I bought from ebay and has a switch) to the led's cables and using the hot glue gun we stick it all in place between the base and the battery holder. While it's still hot we stick the batter holder under the base.

Staff's Handle

With a little green stuff we smooth out the area where we cut the staff out.

08

With a thin drill bit we drill a hole through the miniature's hand so we can put a thin brass rod through it.

09

10

We check that in effect the brass rod fits through the miniature's hand, we mark the height we're looking for and we cut it.

Comprobamos que efectivamente la varilla pasa por la mano de la miniatura y marcamos la longitud que deseamos y cortamos.

11

12

When cutting with the pliers it deforms it a little, so we try to shape it back to a round form and file it down to smoothen.

Finishing the Staff

To finish the staff off we search among our cogs and watch parts for suitable bits.

19

We place a small cog through which the brass rod will fit and a metal bead on top of it and we glue all together with gel superglue.

20

21

Now we place another small cog on top of the bead -I have chosen a cog nearly of the same size but with a slightly different shape- and as a base for the top part with the orb we place another cog this one slightly bigger.

22

23

On the top end of the staff we will this kind of trinket, which has a slightly concave shape where we will mount our orb.

Pintando la capa emplumada

I'm going to use Psychotic Illusions from Green Stuff World's Colorshift range, this means the miniature is primered in black.
It's important for the paint to be thouroughly mixed in order to achieve the best effect possible, so I used a paint mixer I made from a mini milk frother.

29

30

Although this paint can be applied by brush I'll be using the airbrush as it allows me to apply thinner coats and gives me a better control of the amount of paint going on the miniature.
Also, I can use the airbrush to help dry the paint as it's very important that each coat is dry before applying the next one.

31

32

33

After three coats I decide that I like the resulting effect and finish it off with a coat of Vallejo gloss varnish.

Painting the rest of the miniature

First I apply a dark chocolate brown base to the sorceress' skin.

37.

After that a few highlights of beige mixed with a little base color.

38.

A Vallejo skin wash to unify the colors and create shadows.

39

40

42

Solar Yellow and umber wash for the blouse and purple as base coat for the inside of the cape. After that a light purple dry brush and a violet ink watered down wash to create shadows.

All small jewelry details are painted with Glorious gold and have a sepia wash.

 43

46

47

48

Toasted Orange as a base for the skirt, fire orange dry brush and a red wash to finish off.

49

The staff handle is painted with Decayed Metal from Scale 75

50

51

The bead is painted with Pure Copper, also from Scale 75

52

53

The rest of staff parts are painted with Victorian Brass... yes, also from Scale 75.

54

55

56

Once metallics have dried, on bronze parts I apply a verdigri effect with Vallejo Verdigri glaze

Una vez los metálicos hayan secado, en las partes de bronce les doy un efecto verdigrís con la pátina verdín de Vallejo.

The rest of the Sorceress' protections (armbands and greaves) are painted with Green Stuff World's Colorshift "Emerald Getaway", so as to tie in the lighting effects on the miniature. This time as they are fairly small pieces and I don't want to mess up the parts I have already painted -and can't be bothered to go through the trouble of masking- I carefully apply it by brush.

Toques finales

We cover the base with sand and fine gravel over pva glue, paint with a earth brown base, and finish off with beige and grey dry brushes.

We sprinkle a little brown grass with an electrostatic applier.

66

67

We mix some snow effect with still water or acrylic transparent resin and we apply freely on the base.
