How to paint iridescent Cithin armor

Decoration of a fantastic armor with Chameleon paintings.

Colors

For the Dung Beetle Knight, I always wanted iridescent armor so it will look like this little bug (Chrysolina graminis) from my childhood. To achieve this,I’ve used Green Stuff World’s Colorshift paints.

Step 1

I primed the figure to matte black.  Then I airbrushed Emeral Green on the armor, this was the basecoat. After that I used Red Goblin for highlights. I applied Mystic gold for stranger highlights over the Red Goblin, but in smaller area. You can see a few examples on the photo.

Step 2

In this step I blocked everything with black which is not iridescent armor (so the fur, weapon, golden embellishment and some organic parts). Also, I blacklined every little recess on the armor to give the pattern more contrast. For this I can recommend the Rosemary & Co. SER 230 10/0 bristle brush. With this, the blacklining was easy as pie. Note: On this picture you can see a bit better the 3 different colorshift paints and their location.

Step 3

I found the metallic paint too dull, so I thought I will enhance the colors with inks. First I applied yellow ink, basically on top of the Mystic gold parts. Vallejo Game Ink Yellow is perfect for this step.

Step 4

In this step I mixed a light green ink from yellow and dark green ink. With this color I lightly glazed over the areas next to the yellow parts. Lastly I used blue ink mostly to give the shadows a little support. Actually in this step use the rule of cool heavily: if it looks cool it’s okay. You can see that I haven’t applied the blue only for shadows, but there is a bit on the top of the shoulder too. Note: On this picture the golen parts are done as well.
